Hall of Shame – November 12, 2020

COVID-19 is worsening throughout the U.S. as we approach a quarter of a million dead from the virus. In Maryland, the metrics have returned to concerning levels, and Governor Larry Hogan and some local jurisdictions have announced new restrictions to reverse the disquieting trend.

Given these circumstances, I found this post from Reopen Howard County yesterday to be… well, read it and choose your own adjective.

Wow.

I won’t dismiss the very real concerns of parents whose kids are having a difficult time with virtual school. We all would like for things to return to normal. But this virus is still here, it’s getting worse, and people are still dying across the U.S. and right here in Howard County. To hold a “vigil” for students who are safe and alive thanks to virtual schooling, rather than for people who are ill with COVID or who have lost their lives to the virus, is a level of tone-deafness I didn’t think was possible.

In closing, I’ll just let this bit of irony sit here: that the folks who want the government to stay out of their lives, who demand their unfettered freedom even in a pandemic, are demonstrating a total reliance on the government for their children’s education and mental health. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
